Up for review: The Sony BDP-S350 Blu-ray Player. The new BDP-S350 Blu-ray player is Sony’s follow-up to the already popular BDP-S300 model. However this new BDP-S350 has some great new features that the BDP-S300 didn’t have. The Blu-ray disc player has a smaller footprint in comparison to its predecessors. The new Sony BDP-S350 has an attractive outlook with its sleek new black-colored interface with a reflective, metallic blue faceplate. The player also employs Sony’s popular Xross Media Bar.

Sony’s new BDP-S350 is one of the most inexpensive standalone Blu-ray players in the market. Hardly any other Blu-ray player offers a gamut of features at an affordable cost like the BDP-S350. The BDP-S350 Profile 2.0 compatible, as a result, you can seamlessly enjoy full BD-Live content and Bonus View interactive feature. But it doesn’t have the direct firmware update facility. You can use the Ethernet port for update purposes.

Sony’s XMB graphical user interface makes it easy enough to tweak in the menus. Not only Blu-ray discs, the BDP-S350 also plays standard DVDs, upconverting them to 720p, 1080i, or 1080p formats. High definition movies in their original 24fps format can be enjoyed via the HDMI 1.3 output. The Dolby TrueHD soundtracks of the BDP-S350 delivers sound as stunning as the high definition audio formats.

While previous models only had an elapsed and total time display, this Blu-ray player also shows the remaining time function display.

One minor issue of the BDP-S350 is the recessed USB port and lack of onboard DTS-HD Master Audio decoding facility. But as the decoding is in bit stream format, if you have newer receivers, you can still take advantage of DTS-HD Master Audio. Another annoying feature is that the control panel GUI of this player can’t be turned off easily.

Apart from this few flaws, all in all, Sony has done a great job with this player. It’s easy to set up, offers an outstanding picture quality and has a great budget price.
